Donkeys, called "burros" in much of the United States, are the domesticated descendants of the African wild ass. Used primarily to pull carts and plows or as pack animals, there are 40 million working animals worldwide. In the deserts of the American Southwest, burros have escaped captivity and now reproduce in the wild, like this female, called a Jenny. Tens of thousands of wild burros with few natural predators have spread through the southwest, challenging federal land management staff and threatening the ability of rangelands to support their increasing number
