Established in 1880 as a gold mining camp, Juneau became Alaska's capital in 1906. The city has about 32,000 residents, but there are no roads connecting the city to the rest of Alaska, so they must come and go by ships or planes. The rugged, glacially-carved terrain of mountains and sea inspire over a million cruise ship passengers to visit  each year. These two images show Gastineau Channel from Mount Roberts and the downtown area along Franklin Street
