Although Mexican free-tailed bats are small, weighing about 12 grams and measuring 3.5 inches long, they consume huge numbers of insects. A colony living under a bridge in Austin, Texas, for example, can eat up to 30,000 pounds of insects each night. The bats use echolocation for navigation and to detect prey. Most migrate south to Central and South America in the winter.
