Although not antelopes, they are often called American antelopes because they closely resemble the true antelopes of the Old World. Pronghorns are the only surviving members of the family Antilocapridae, which had twelve species in North America during the Ice Age. First recorded and studied during the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806, pronghorns are the fastest land mammals found in the Western Hemisphere, built for maximum predator evasion through running.
