These solitary animals, measuring up to four feet long, usually retreat into caves or burrows to hibernate in the winter. During hot daytime hours they lie coiled in the shade of shrubs or rocks. They primarily eat small mammals such as prairie dogs, rats, gophers and mice. They can move their rattles (which are made of keratin, like fingernails) up to 60 times per second. Members of the subfamily called pit vipers, eastern and western diamondback rattlesnakes are responsible for the largest number of snakebite fatalities in the United States.
